Henry Martyn 

(1781-1812) 

Henry Martyn was an English Anglican priest, missionary, and brilliant linguist.

He went to India in 1806 as a chaplain of the East India Company, but his heart was set on evangelism and Bible translation among Muslims and Hindus.

He was one of the most devoted early Protestant missionaries—best known as a scholar-missionary and Bible translator to India and Persia (Iran)

What did Henry Martyn do for God in ministry?

1.Missionary to India and Persia

•Served in India (Calcutta, Cawnpore / Kanpur)

•Later travelled to Persia (Iran) to reach Muslims


2.Bible translation

•Translated the New Testament into Urdu (Hindustani)

•Translated the New Testament into Persian

•Began work on Arabic translation


3.Preaching and evangelism

•Preached Christ boldly to Muslims, Hindus, and British soldiers

•Engaged in respectful debates with Islamic scholars

•Used his exceptional academic gifts for mission, not comfort

•Believed accurate translation was essential for true faith

Martyn’s approach was intellectual, spiritual, and deeply personal:

What sacrifices did he make?

Henry Martyn’s sacrifices were immense:

•Gave up a brilliant academic career at Cambridge

•Never married (gave up his love, Lydia Grenfell)

•Lived in constant weakness and sickness

•Faced rejection and little visible success

•Burned out his body in service to God

His famous words capture his sacrifice:

“Let me burn out for God.”


How did Henry Martyn die?

•Died in 1812 at the age of 31

•Place: Tokat, Ottoman Turkey

•Cause: Illness (likely tuberculosis or fever), worsened by:

Exhaustion

Harsh travel conditions

Poor health

He died alone, far from home, while traveling back to England
