William Carey
(1761-1834)
William Carey (1761–1834) is known as “the Father of Modern Protestant Missions.” His life completely reshaped Christian missions—especially in India
William Carey was an English Baptist missionary, Bible translator, educator, and social reformer.
He came to India in 1793 and spent over 40 years serving God there, mainly in Serampore (near Calcutta / Kolkata).

What did William Carey do for God in ministry?
1.Pioneer of modern missions
•Inspired global missions through his book:
“An Enquiry into the Obligations of Christians to Use Means for the Conversion of the Heathens” (1792)
•Helped found the Baptist Missionary Society
2.Bible translation
•Translated the Bible (full or parts) into 40+ Indian languages and dialects, including:
Bengali
Sanskrit
Hindi
Marathi
Oriya
•Believed everyone should hear God’s Word in their mother tongue
3.Education and institutions
•Founded Serampore College (1818) for training pastors and leaders
•Promoted education for Indians, not just Europeans

What sacrifices did he make?
William Carey’s sacrifices were lifelong and deep:
•Lived in poverty for many years
•Lost two wives (Dorothy suffered mental illness; Charlotte died later)
•Lost children to disease
•Faced discouragement—7 years before his first convert
•Lost years of work in a printing press fire (1812)
•Gave his entire life to India without fame or comfort
How did William Carey die?
•Died in 1834 at the age of 73
•Place: Serampore, India
•Cause: Natural causes, after long illness and exhaustion
He never returned to England—India became his home.
