Robert Morrison 

(1782-1834) 

Robert Morrison was a Scottish Presbyterian missionary sent by the London Missionary Society.

He arrived in China (Canton/Guangzhou) in 1807, when foreign missionaries were strictly restricted.

First Protestant missionary in China. He served for 27 years where he learned the Chinese culture and language, eventually translating the Bible into Wali. Known as the father of Anglo-Chinese literature

Testimony:- Robert Morrison sacrificed recognition, safety, and homeland to give the Chinese people the Bible in their own language, opening the door for all future Protestant missions in China.



What did Robert Morrison do for God in ministry?

1.Pioneer missionary to China

•First Protestant missionary to live and work in China

•Served mainly in Canton (Guangzhou) and Macau


2.Bible translation

•Translated the entire Bible into Chinese (completed in 1819)

•This was the first complete Chinese Protestant Bible


3.Language tools

•Compiled a Chinese–English dictionary (6 volumes)

•Helped Western missionaries understand Chinese language and culture


4.Evangelism and discipleship

•Led the first known Protestant convert in China, Liang A-fa

•Liang later influenced others, including people connected to major movements in China


5.Printing and publishing

•Established printing work to spread Scripture and Christian literature


What methods did he use to change people?

Morrison’s methods were patient, quiet, and strategic:

1.Language mastery

•Spent years learning classical and spoken Chinese

•Believed Scripture in the heart language was essential


2.Translation-centred mission

•Focused more on Bible translation than public preaching

•Worked behind the scenes under constant restrictions


3.Cultural sensitivity

•Avoided open confrontation

•Respected Chinese customs and laws to stay and serve


4.Training locals

•Discipled Chinese believers to share faith quietly and wisely


What sacrifices did he make?

Robert Morrison’s sacrifices were heavy and mostly unseen:

•Worked many years with almost no converts

•Lived under constant government surveillance

•Could not preach openly

•Endured isolation and loneliness

•Risked imprisonment or expulsion daily

•Gave his entire adult life to China


How did Robert Morrison die?

•Died in 1834 at the age of 52

•Place: Canton (Guangzhou), China

•Cause: Illness and exhaustion after years of intense work

He was buried in Macau, far from his homeland
