Prayer
5 “And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. 6 But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. 7 And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. 8 Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.
Solitary place , lonely places , Dismissed people
Purpose of Solitude:- It is not isolation for despair, but a sacred pause—a place of prayer, testing, and preparation for mission.
lonely places:- When you become alone with world then only you can become one with God
Jesus Dismissing Crowds:- In Matthew 14:23, after dismissing the people, Jesus went alone to pray. The dismissal was not rejection but a boundary to preserve intimacy with God.
Mark 1:35: "Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed".
Luke 5:16: "But Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed".
Matthew 14:23: "After he had dismissed them, he went up on a mountainside by himself to pray. Later that night, he was there alone".
THE POWER OF PRAYER
James 5:13-17
The Prayer of Faith
13 Is anyone among you suffering? Let him pray. Is anyone cheerful? Let him sing praise. 14 Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. 15 And the prayer of faith will save the one who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven. 16 Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working.
17 Elijah was a man with a nature like ours, and he prayed fervently that it might not rain, and for three years and six months it did not rain on the earth. 18 Then he prayed again, and heaven gave rain, and the earth bore its fruit.
The Greek word used implies intense, continual, heartfelt prayer.
Elijah’s prayer was not casual; it was persistent and aligned with God’s will.
This shows that prayer is not about eloquence but about faith and perseverance.
Deeper Reflection
- Faith and Obedience: Elijah’s prayers were effective because they were rooted in obedience to God’s word. Prayer without surrender is powerless.
- Intercession: Elijah stood between God and Israel, showing the role of believers as intercessors for nations, families, and communities.
- Transformation: Just as rain brought fruit, prayer brings spiritual fruit—love, joy, peace, restoration.
